Compassion for Addicts -- Who Knew?

HELP FOR ADDICTS AWAITING TREATMENT

Baltimore will receive $1 million from private foundations to help addicts awaiting slots in drug-treatment centers. Threshold to Recovery, a three-year effort to be overseen by the administration of Mayor Martin O'Malley, will offer services like support groups, counseling, acupuncture, tai chi classes and stress management.

The city has an estimated 40,000 drug addicts. Even the family of the police commissioner, Leonard D. Hamm, has been touched by addiction: Mr. Hamm's stepdaughter, Nicole Sesker, is a heroin addict. Addicts in Baltimore often wait weeks or months to get into treatment.
